If you thought Twitter wouldn’t break the news…
By Zoe

Think again. So was the case on December 21 when Rachel Roy announced she’ll be traveling to Africa with R&B singer Estelle.
The announcement was also made on Facebook, in which the famed jewelry designer wrote: “Next month Estelle & I will travel to Africa to meet women survivors of genocide, abuse & poverty. Through Fairwinds Trading these women are able to earn an income by creating exquisite handmade goods which are sold in the U.S. I am grateful to play a role in helping to change their lives by providing jobs & offering their handcrafted pieces through RRR.”
The handcrafted pieces consisting of clutches & bracelets that are made by women in Rwanda and Tanzania will be offered as part of the RACHEL Rachel Roy collection. Proceeds from each piece help benefit the lives of victims of abuse, genocide and poverty by providing them the opportunity to earn money and find financial independence.
Through Twitter and Facebook, Estelle, Rachel, and her ten year-old daughter Ava will chronicle their journey with photographs and anecdotes about their amazing international venture.

EvelynH. Jewelry Even Has Politicians Talking
By Samantha

Evelyn Huang, designer of EvelynH. Jewelry is definitely taking off full speed, and garnering notice from some extremely high profile politicians and celebrities alike. Recently, a pair of her beautiful earrings, the “Africa’s Hope Diamond Drop,” won the 2009 Women’s Jewelry Association DIVA Award. The earrings feature 3.54 karats in African emeralds, 4.89 karats of colorless diamonds and are set in 18 karat white gold. They are valued at over $19,000. Evelyn used these emeralds in the earrings because the color green not only represents hope, but is also the color of one of Earth’s natural resources, and is her signature color. The teardrop design is meant to resemble an Angel’s harp, which is the emblem of the D.E.F.’s Africa’s Angels. It was these earrings that she auctioned off at the Diamond Empowerment Fund’s annual “Dallas Rock” gala. D.E.F. is an international, non-profit organization supporting education, which serves to empower disadvantaged, impoverished children in African nations where diamonds are a major resource.
At the gala, the earrings were an item to watch for potential bidders for their beauty and their ties to the D.E.F. However, things only got better for Evelyn Huang when Russell Simmons, media mogul, entrepreneur and D.E.F. Founder, was the winning bidder for the earrings, and immediately gifted them to Barbara Bush, who was one of the people being honored at the high profile event for her extensive work with the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Capetown, South Africa. Russell Simmons showed again his charitable spirit, true passion for his charity and interest in design with this bid, and the generous gift that he made of it. With such great passion behind her work, Evelyn Huang is a jewelry designer that is flying above the radar.
