Arise Magazine African Collective Fall 2010

By Jessica

I love discovering emergent designers that are daring, innovative and inspired. For their Fall 2010 runway show, the Arise Magazine African Collective presented three such artisans.

Surrounded by a crowd of the industry’s elite, including celebrity stylist, June Ambrose and models, Coco Rocha and Liya Kibede, three African designers/brands prepared to make their mark on Fashion’s most important week: Black Coffee, Loin Cloth & Ashes and Deola Sagoe.

Taking inspiration from Pablo Picasso’s reinterpretation of African masks, designers Jacques van der Watt and Danica Lepen of Black Coffee presented a line of flesh tone cocoon-shaped coats, structured shoulders in architectural shapes and fluid dresses in soft, mint green colors. Models, including Chanel Iman, wore clean yet dramatic chignons that presented an elegant contrast to the sharp, geometric silhouettes. The light eye make-up and a nude lip complemented the look, courtesy of Iman Cosmetics.

The second collection was presented by Tanzanian designer, Anisa Mpungwe, of the brand, Loin Cloth and Ashes. Inspired by her father’s hometown of Ifakara, Mpungwe’s collection was a melange of body-skimming dresses, billowy pants and flowing skirts with an origami bird motif that runs throughout. Urban blacks and grays comprise a monochromatic color palette, energized with touches of metallic gold, electric blue and sharp stripes.

Hailing from Nigeria, designer Deola Sagoe, showed her collection of bodycon dresses, slim pants and military-inspired jackets with metallic, embroidered and lace flourishes. Inspired by East African Maasai warriors and 18th century European military uniforms, the looks were sharp, valiant, sassy and strong. The models were directed to walk with strength and confidence as the embodiments of Sagoe’s design philosophy. Leading the army of models, Lopez stormed the catwalk with a fierce stride (Rae Holiday of Stuff Fly People Like remarked, “Sessilee walked off the runway and took the show with her!”) and each model followed her lead. At the close of the show, designer Deola Sagoe walked out to a standing ovation.

A new age of angels

By Zoe

VS.1.1

Yummy new mummy Heidi Klum graced the catwalk last Thursday at the Lexington Avenue Armory in New York City for the much sought out Victoria’s Secret show. Klum, who gave birth to a daughter six weeks ago, emerged from the massive, castle-like set wearing a purple corset covered with poufs of tulle.

Uber models Emanuela de Paula, Chanel Iman, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Lindsay Ellingson and Candice Swanepoel ushered in a new age of sexy intimates as the newest VS angels.

The show wasn’t short of theatrical with acrobatic dancers, a choir and giant polka-dot dog balloon. Victoria’s Secret is also hosting an online model search that will be chosen by the public. The winner will make an appearance on the televised version of the show slated to air on CBS Tuesday, December 1.

VS outfits broke into four themes– Star Trooper with body armor and breast plates and; hippie happy Pink Planet, Enchanted Forest and Romantic Journey, with a lot of lace. The show also focused on blingy jewels, faux fur and Thigh-high boots.

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover girl Marissa Miller donned the $3 million, diamond-encrusted bra that Klum normally wears. The Black Eyed Peas performed that night and Fergie wore a black, jeweled bodysuit. She did a change into a green corset gown later that evening.

With a front row packed with legends like Anna Wintour, little wonder the show was opened by no other than Naomi Campbell! Coco Rocha and Chanel Iman were also showing off Issa London’s latest spring summer 10 collection.

On what looked like poolside glamour, Naomi adorned an halter-neck tropical print dress with a matching large-brimmed hat. Other stand out pieces include; Swimsuits with hoods or kimono sleeves, Monochrome crawling ant prints on short kaftans, animal prints on asymmetrical dresses, matching large hats or on long dresses,

All in all, if you want to do effortless chic on a tropical holiday, there is a variety to choose from here. The luxury of this jersey fabrics are what makes resort holidays a dream come true.

By Faith

Chanel-Sessilee-Jourdan-Arlenis-by-Emma-Summerton-for-i-D-September-2009 The September 2009 cover of i-D Magazine features four of the brightest stars in the modeling industry to date: (from left to right) Chanel Iman, Sessilee Lopez, Jourdan Dunn, and Arlenis Sosa. Photographer Emma Summerton and stylist Edward Enninful collaborated to create this cover celebrating diversity and youth.

Enninful is a champion of diversity in the fashion industry. Born in Ghana and growing up in London, he pulls from a multitude of international influences. He is a famed stylist and the Fashion Director of i-D magazine (the youngest ever to date starting at age 18). He is a Contributing  Fashion Editor at Vogue Italia as well as Vogue Nippon and he styles shoots for countless others.

Here is an amazing NYTimes article about Enninful’s career. The likes of Donatella Versace and Franca Sozzani attest to his greatness.

In an industry where diversity is not always seen, Enninful is a beacon of hope and a sign that fashion does indeed have a bright and colorful future.

More of Enninful’s work below.
