Edwing D'Angelo Takes His Fashions Behind the Scenes
By Samantha
For the second year in a row, luxury designer Edwing D’Angelo has been asked to be the featured designer at the NAACP Awards, with a presentation backstage for celebrities and super lucky VIP’s. I had the chance to speak with D’Angelo today, in the middle of his preparations for the show, to learn a bit about him and a lot about his glamorous collection.
Just coming off from New York Fashion Week, the runway collections will be worn by models backstage at the NAACP Awards, who will also act as hosts, escorting celebrities on stage. Chyna Layne, of Precious, who is the designer’s current muse, will also be one of the celebrities wearing one of the designers custom made creations.
D’Angelo is Columbian born, and the 5th in a generation of tailors, who took his unique acquired skill-set to the next level, with a lot of passion, and even more work. After graduating from law school, he worked in law firms for 12 years, but always had a passion to be doing something different. When his sister’s prom came about, he designed her dress, and instantly, her friends all wanted something created by the designer. From there, his line of one-of-a-kind, high-end pieces was created. Well, not that easily. He worked for 2 years more as a lawyer, saving every penny, working at nights, and having people put together his samples during the day while he worked. After two years, he officially left law, and became a designer extraordinaire. In August of 2002, his first boutique opened in Harlem.
Two of the first celebrities to don his gowns were Vivica Fox and Patti la Belle. With the success of the line, and its ultra luxurious vibe, the designer picked up and moved his boutique to SoHo. For Fall/Winter 2010, his 10th collection, he was inspired by 1940s and 50s New York and Barbra Streisand’s “New York State of Mind.” Back in the day when women all dressed to a peek of sophistication, fully dressed, with the arrival of second tier monarchies and princess moving to New York, D’Angelo sought to bring that vibe back with a modern twist of edge. Black was the predominant color, with pops of other colors throughout, and his signature orange lining giving an added kick. The designer is way ahead, and even let me know that for Spring 2011, he is thinking of a garden-ish theme, with Lost Eden as the inspiration.
The Edwing D’Angelo collection has a young, modern vibe that is fresh yet luxurious. He dreams of dressing Megan Fox, Reese Witherspoon, Taylor Lautner and Will Smith (yes, his line is available for men, too). His show backstage at the NAACP Awards is part of his plan of moving into the Hollywood lifestyle, garnering a larger following amongst celebrities and high-end consumers. While his pieces are one-of-a-kind, he plans to expand to create pieces that are also off the rack, but he will still continue designing unique pieces for his clientele. Regardless, he plans to stick to creating collections that are epitomized by sheer elegance.

Fashion Week Sneak Peek: Diego Binetti F/W 2010
By Samantha
This Sunday, Diego Binetti will showcase his Fall/Winter 2010 collection with a presentation at Exit Art. Binetti has been showing at New York Fashion Week since 2001, and we are very fortunate to have a sneak peek into what viewers will get to see at the presentation.
Inspired by the Far East in its culture and ancient landmarks, this collection is luxuriously over the top yet delicately refined made for the Binetti woman that loves to both learn about and wear precious artwork. Each gown takes 3 weeks and 4 seamstresses to create with hand details and couture finishing. Each piece is embellished with beads which Binetti personally picked out at Indian bazaars and the beading is reminiscent of Hoi An, Vietman, full of romantic juxtapositions and innovative classics. The colors range from the bold reds of lost Chinese dynasties to the lush greens of Vietman’s untouched world to darker shades and black representing the colors of the ocean at nightfall. With a perfect mix of prints and bold solids, Binetti’s goal was to make this collection magical, to invite people to see his journeys to the Far East through his creations.
While the gowns are a highlight of Binetti’s work, the collection also includes jewel encrusted wool boucle skirts and cardigans inspired by Kandinsky motifs, draped to the ground, with an imaginative, out-of-the-box vibe. Most of the pieces drape to the ground, expertly tailored to create silhouettes that are literally to die for. As the Binetti woman walks in the designer’s gown, she looks full of passion, culture, intellect and a fresh take on modern day beauty. With this preview sketch from the collection, I cannot wait to see images from the show. And to be able to touch a Binetti dress, that would be an honor.

Lunar Lights and Confectionary Colors Make Chanel Couture Spring 2010
By Jessica
Fashion’s dark knight has lightened up for Couture Spring 2010 and we are not complaining. For his latest collection, Karl Lagerfeld steered clear of his signature color palette which usually comprises black and navy and decided to embrace the fresh hues of spring. The result: a breath of fresh spring air from the House of Chanel.
“Neon Baroque” is the catchphrase du jour and serves as an inspiration for the collection. The concept came to Lagerfeld in “an electronic flash in my head at five o’clock one morning. Silver and pastel.”(Style.com)
The show triggered off with a brand new rendition of the classic Chanel suit teamed up with culottes this time and all in fondant icing colors like lemon lime, candy-floss pink, frosted lilac, pistachio green and tangerine. Then came the batch of frothy tiered dresses in degradé, followed by exquisite silk gowns embroidered with what could only be molten metal blossoming into beautiful flowers.
The accessories added a futuristic touch what with the foil fingerless gloves and gossamer tights. As is always the case with Chanel, the shoes made a statement loud and proud. Sculpted heels studded with pearls made for perfect faux-boots, all in space-age silver of course.
With the clothes and accessories doing all the talking, the look is clean and fresh with a dab of red on the lips. Hair, however, took a new form reminiscent of Minnie Mouse with white highlights. — Dyuti Mishra

Chinese filmmaker shows Prada in 'First Spring'
By Sophie
Chinese filmmaker and artist, Yang Fudong, has recently collaborated with the esteemed couture company, Prada. In his film, ‘First Spring,’ Fudong portrays a film noire with hints of ancient mysticism.
In the film men walk the streets of Shanghai wearing Prada menswear as Chinese women dance and are dressed in mixtures of couture and traditional attire.
Fudong claims that the film is based on the Chinese proverb that states,”the whole year’s work depends on a good start in spring.” This film certainly portrays that good start, with its fresh take on an old fashion stand-by.
Whimsical and refreshing, ‘First Spring’ is unlike any other film out there.
