Lunar Lights and Confectionary Colors Make Chanel Couture Spring 2010

Fashion’s dark knight has lightened up for Couture Spring 2010 and we are not complaining. For his latest collection, Karl Lagerfeld steered clear of his signature color palette which usually comprises black and navy and decided to embrace the fresh hues of spring. The result: a breath of fresh spring air from the House of Chanel.

“Neon Baroque” is the catchphrase du jour and serves as an inspiration for the collection. The concept came to Lagerfeld in “an electronic flash in my head at five o’clock one morning. Silver and pastel.”(Style.com)

The show triggered off with a brand new rendition of the classic Chanel suit teamed up with culottes this time and all in fondant icing colors like lemon lime, candy-floss pink, frosted lilac, pistachio green and tangerine. Then came the batch of frothy tiered dresses in degradé, followed by exquisite silk gowns embroidered with what could only be molten metal blossoming into beautiful flowers.

The accessories added a futuristic touch what with the foil fingerless gloves and gossamer tights. As is always the case with Chanel, the shoes made a statement loud and proud. Sculpted heels studded with pearls made for perfect faux-boots, all in space-age silver of course.

With the clothes and accessories doing all the talking, the look is clean and fresh with a dab of red on the lips. Hair, however, took a new form reminiscent of Minnie Mouse with white highlights. — Dyuti Mishra

Miss Dirty Martini Shot by Karl Lagerfeld in the House of Chanel

Miss Dirty Martini posed alongside Coco look-alike, actress Jane Schmitt, who once starred as Gabrielle Chanel in one of Lagerfeld’s short films, “Paris-Shanghai: A Fantasy.” Wearing accessories by Chanel and Lagerfeld—along with pasties, cut-out bras, garter belts and stockings—Miss Dirty Martini looks surprisingly right at home in Coco’s Rue Cambon apartment. V63 hits newsstands until January 14, 2010, don’t miss out.

When asked about why she accepted the invitation to pose for V, Miss Dirty Martini said: “Posing on the Double C’s, modeling like my life depended on it, I thought, ‘Why not? Why can’t designers make fashion that mimics the architecture of hips and busts and then choose models that wear it perfectly?’”

“COCO A GO-GO” by V MAGAZINE

Miss Dirty Martini has made a living out of making an entrance. And sure enough, the burlesque star’s mad, late-night spin through the Chanel atelier ended up blowing the roof off 31 rue Cambon. Coco would be spinning in her twinset, if she wasn’t a part of the show.

Chanel Pre-Fall 2010

Shanghai is known as the “Paris of East” so what better place for Karl Lagerfeld to have shown Chanel’s Pre-Fall 2010 collection. The collection was titled “Paris Shanghai” and was an ode to 1930s Shanghai and the opulence of its imperial court. The collection was a beautiful departure from Chanel’s traditional black and white backdrop with splashes of bright reds and purples.

The collection oozed luxury and femininity. Beautiful dresses were frequent in the collection in form-fitting silhouettes and beautiful fabrics from Chanel’s signature tweed to printed silks. Coats were ravishing with out-of-this-world detailing from armored sleeves befitting a samurai to monogram Chanel Cs. The accessories were stunning from cascading beaded necklaces, long statement earrings, Chanel’s signature brooches, and thigh-high boots with zipper detailing.

The hair and makeup for the collection were completely elegant. Bouffants were the hairstyles of the day adding to the feeling of luxury and old world glamour. Eyebrows were thick and exaggerated and the eyes were accentuated with black eyeliner to truly give the feeling of Chinese aristocracy.

Chanel’s Pre-Fall 2010 Collection is one that will go down in history and shows an appreciation for the Shanghai of times past. More highlights from the collection below (Images courtesy of WWD).

When Rupert met Karl Lagerfeld

Asteroid mirror silver SIDE VIEW

When not one but two fashion giants collaborated on a range of shoes last year, the results were spectacular – remember those shoe boots with tiny axes hanging off the heel? So it’s no wonder that Karl Lagerfeld and Rupert Sanderson have decided to continue their partnership made in shoe heaven.

For Spring 2010, Rupert has reinterpreted his best-selling Asteroid and Finesse styles in white, black and silver to perfectly mesh with Lagerfeld’s eponymous line, which featured a slew of short, sharp monochrome dresses with metallic embellishments. The futuristic feel of the collection was captured in the shoes by way of an architectural stiletto heel and double straps on the front panels that wrap around and buckle underneath the sole. Said panels also feature a stencil version of Jean-Baptiste Mondino’s famous photograph of Kaiser Karl himself in rock star pose. As if that wasn’t enough, the uppers are interchangeable between the three colourways. Futurism, modern art, customisability…what more could you ask for in a shoe?

The Karl Lagerfeld collection for Rupert Sanderson is available by made to order only but you can get this season’s Asteroid online now at the Sanderson store.

Karl Lagerfeld made it clear that agricultural workers could be glamorous too. A giant hay barn in the centre of the Grand Palais was the setting for the Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel’s spring summer 10 collection. Even though it was all wheats, baskets and hay, Farmers never looked so good dressed as six foot models in soft shades of pale pink, peach, ivory, tan and black. White and black silk ribbons woven into tweed, were jackets, skirts and dresses finished in tattered edges . Cheeky or rightly put, chic-y, was the order of the day as skirts were split at both ends all the way up while Sasha Pivovarova pretended to chat away on her blackberry as she showed off one of the cropped tweed jackets . More to follow were springy trapeze mini-skirts, broderie anglaise jackets with puffed shoulders, short lace dresses that were black overlaid in white or gorgeous neon peach overlaid in cream. There was also the most gorgeous raffia bag in basket weave and classic Chanel straps. Even though there was fake tattoo imprinted on almost every leg, it was impossible not to notice the double C high-heeled clogs that pointed out in clear detail what the whole collection was about. His and hers matching ensembles made a few appearances, Lara Stone walked as the Chanel bride with two grooms, all of whom fell into the hay as Karl took his final bow and Lily Allen appeared from underground to give a rendition. Once again, Chanel has stamped the C into Chic, incredibly well.
