Marc Jacobs Fall 2010

The theatrics were at an all time high at the Marc Jacobs fall 2010 show. It started with Marc Jacobs and Robert Duffy walking around the room tearing down construction paper to reveal the collection. Waiting behind those brown paper curtains, however, was the most shocking element of all: fifty-six models were standing stock still in clothes of the simplest form. Yes, Marc Jacobs, the elaborate, cutting-edge designer has embraced elegant minimalism for Fall.

With “Somewhere over the rainbow” blasting in the background, the models took the runway one simple profile at a time. The colour palette stayed true to the Marc Jacobs aesthetic: neutrals, pastels and an occasional glint of metal. The fabrics—wool, cashmere, velvet, cotton and fur trim—were quintessential Marc Jacobs as well. In style and presentation, the collection could have been any one of his previous, signature shows. However, a closer look revealed the show was anything but similar. In an industry where change is the only constant and fresh is never fresh enough, Marc Jacobs Fall 2010 gave editors and buyers something to think about with its absolute simplicity and lack of unnecessary ‘innovation.’ “There’s so much striving for newness now that newness feels less new.” said Jacobs after the show. There, we have it. Marc presented a collection of A-line skirts, sequined sweaters, oversized coats, three-piece suits and calf-length dresses, all very fuss-free and dare I say, conservative. Nevertheless, there is no denying of his genius; velvet has never looked more alluring and the clear plastic trench is a stunning statement piece.

With the new hemline standards set here, footwear came in the form of block-heeled pumps worn with ankle socks or tie-up boots. Handbags came in a vast assortment, from envelope clutches to satchels and more.

The beauty look, like the silhouettes, was understated and clean with little hints of mascara and a slightly tinted pout. Hair lengths were defined along with the hem lengths; four inches below the collar bone is how it goes at Marc Jacobs.

DavidBartonGym hosts 8th annual toy drive

TD

Just as much as this month brings us celebration and festivities, it’s also the season of giving.

On December 21, David Barton and wife Susan Bartsch teamed up with fashion icons Marc Jacobs and Narciso Rodriguez, Susan Sarandon, hoteliers Ian & Tania Schrager, celebrity chef Art Smith and photographer Patrick McMullan to host the 8th annual DavidBartonGym Toy Drive at their new Astor Place locale in New York City.

Guests were suggested to donate new toys for delivery to children’s hospitals and charities throughout New York City. Pairing philanthropy with celebration, the party certainly was the talk of the town: complimentary and festive cocktails were made readily available, remixes of the hottest tracks were spun, and guests received passes of up to one month at any DavidBartonGym.

Other notable guests included Amanda Lepore, Patrick Mcdonald, Michelle Harper and Michael Musto.

Dakota Fanning straps on her Proenza Schouler PS1

DakotaFanning BAGThe War of Worlds star was spotted last week with her stylish Proenza Schouler PS1 bag in black. The bag, available at Barney’s for $1,995.00, also comes in pink and white.

The leather flap front has a metal foldover closure with a removable shoulder strap and the bag is oh so perfect on any urbanista. The PS1s were released last year, but have that stylish city look that won’t ever fade. The bags can feel a little masculine, much like a messenger bag, but the soft leather and closures define feminine appeal.

Proenza Schouler was founded in 2002 by Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough, who first met in 1999 while studying at Parsons School of Design. Hernandez interned at Michael Kors and McCollough interned at Marc Jacobs while at Parsons, and the result was a line that defined youthfulness, minimalism and urban sleekness with pencil skirts, tailor men’s coats and color-blocked chiffon evening gowns cinched with satin belts.
