Michael Kors Fall 2010

By Jessica

For fall 2010, it seems Michael Kors chose to go on a safari, a winter safari that is. The Out of Africa look has served as an inspiration to many a designer before but only few choose to interpret into a winter collection. Michael takes it to a whole new level without drifting away from that all-American style that is his quintessential design philosophy.

Knits and fur were the key features which were later followed by some shimmer and sheer. Silhouettes were clean cut and well-tailored while the garments were devoid of any excessive ornamentation. From fitted sweaters, chunky cardigans and fur coats to body-con gowns and skirts, the show had it all. Desert colors like fawn, eggshell, slate, taupe and auburn later gave way to sparkly black, shiny silver and glittering gold for the evening. One significant piece in the collection was a chrome-hued long parka with a round fur collar.  Circular scarves, beanies, knitted gloves and leg warmers went along with the clothes.

Belts severed their purpose of cinching in the waist but also adorned the neck of the models. As for the beauty, the sun-kissed glow, shimmery-smoky eyes and a rosy pout completed the look.

Colette Malouf Goes to East Africa and Comes Back Bolder Than Ever

By Samantha

Manhattanite accessory designer, Colette Malouf’s latest collection is inspired by her recent trip to East Africa. In this vivid collection, Malouf celebrates the majestic landscape of Kenya and the colorful splendor of Masai. Her vibrant range of accessories reflects the exquisite lands through its geometric prints, fun textiles and bold use of color.

New York sensibilities are melded together with East African culture to create a collection that includes turban head-wraps and wooden costume jewelry. Her love of Africa is evident throughout the collection yet each piece boasts a New York street vibe that gives it a modern twist.

In 1987, Malouf came to fashion acclaim with her now infamous ponytail holders, selling over 100,000 in the first year. Now, with each new and expanded collection, we see Malouf’s artistic designs and inspirations come to life.

Malouf grew up surrounded by the New York fashion scene with her family’s couture lounge wear business in her backyard. She found herself at a young age enamored with her grandmother’s collection of ’30s, ’40s and ’50s couture accessories and clothing. It is the pieces she adorned herself with then that she uses as constant sources of inspiration today.

Malouf strives to make each collection both classic and elegant, while giving each piece a funky edge that makes it noticeable. She brings her fashion street sense together with her long love of couture to create artful accessories.

Fashion lovers have seen her collections on the screen in Sex and the City and on Gossip Girl. She has also collaborated with Michael Kors and Derek Lam for their Fashion Week runway presentations. Malouf counts Oprah, Halle Berry and Anne Hathaway as sincere fans of her collections. The collection is available at Henri Bendel and Bergdorf Goodman.

Visit Colette Malouf for more information on the designer and her collections.

Dakota Fanning straps on her Proenza Schouler PS1

By Zoe

DakotaFanning BAGThe War of Worlds star was spotted last week with her stylish Proenza Schouler PS1 bag in black. The bag, available at Barney’s for $1,995.00, also comes in pink and white.

The leather flap front has a metal foldover closure with a removable shoulder strap and the bag is oh so perfect on any urbanista. The PS1s were released last year, but have that stylish city look that won’t ever fade. The bags can feel a little masculine, much like a messenger bag, but the soft leather and closures define feminine appeal.

Proenza Schouler was founded in 2002 by Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough, who first met in 1999 while studying at Parsons School of Design. Hernandez interned at Michael Kors and McCollough interned at Marc Jacobs while at Parsons, and the result was a line that defined youthfulness, minimalism and urban sleekness with pencil skirts, tailor men’s coats and color-blocked chiffon evening gowns cinched with satin belts.
